Kedarnath Temple -
An imposing sight,
standing in the middle of
a wide plateau surrounded
by lofty snow covered peaks.
The present temple, built
in 8th centuary A.D. by Adi
Shankaracharya, stands adjacent
to the site of an earlier
temple built by the Pandavas.
The inner walls of the assembly
hall are decorated with figures
of various deities and scenes
from mythology. Outside the
temple door a large statue
of the Nandi Bull stands as
guard. Dedicated to Lord Shiva,
the exquisitely architectured
Kedarnath temple is considered
to be more than 1000 years
old. Built of extremely large,
heavy and evenly cut grey
slabs of stones, it evokes
wonder as to how these heavy
slabs had been handled in
the earlier days. The temple
has a "Garbha Griha" for worship
and a Mandap, apt for assemblies
of pilgrims and visitors. |

Badrinath is one
of the ‘four dhams’
of the country and is
situated at an elevation
of 3,133 mts. above
sea-level. Is is flanked
by two mountain ranges
known as Nar & Narayan,
with the towering Neelkanth
peak providing a splendid
backdrop. This reversed
spot ws once carpeted
with wild berries which
gave it the name ‘Badri
Van’, meaning ‘forest
of berries’. Facing
the temple at the bank
of Alaknanda river is
a hot water spring known
as ‘Tapt Kund’. A bath
in this spring is very
refreshing. It is believed
that worshipping at
this shrine is a means
of liberating the soul
from the bound of transmigration.

Haridwar, wherein this Sevashram is situated,
is cozily located in the foothills
of Himalayas. It represents
the point where the holiest
river Ganga reaches the plains,
speeds past in haste and spreads
over Northern plains. Haridwar
is also the gateway to the
Himalayan pilgrimage shrines
of Badrinath and Kedarnath.
Down the ages, owing to the
above-mentioned three significances
and many more, special importance
of Haridwar as the ever-refreshing
mystic venue for the purification
of mind, body and soul gained
more impetus. It ever bustles
in consonance with the eternal
tingling sound of waters of
Ganges with the coming and
going of pilgrims and tourists
from all walks of life and
also from all corners.

Rishikesh, also
known as the 'place
of sages' is Haridwar,
at the confluence of
the Chandrabhaga and
Ganga. It is believed
that God by the name
of 'Hrishikesh' had
appeared as an answer
to the hard penances
by Rabhiya Rishi and
henceforth the place
derived its name. It
is the starting point
for the Char dham pilgrims
but also for the people
who are interested in
meditation, yoga and
other aspects of Hinduism.
For the adventure seekers,
rishikesh is the suggested
place for starting their
trekking expeditions
to the Himalayan peaks
and for rafting. Rishikesh
is one of the most popular
pilgrim centres and
gateway to the Himalayan
Shrines of Badrinath,
Kedarnath, Gangotri
and Yamunotri.
